Yesterday Florida Dash editor Willie Lawson had a cup of coffee with Tampa’s newest city council member, Guido Maniscalco. Maniscalco, a former Republican turned Democrat ran and won the non partisan seat in a hotly contested race. Maniscalco, by his own admission is locked in a time warp of sorts. He enjoys the music of Sinatra and the “Rat Pack.” But is extremely knowledgeable about history and the effect it has had on local events. Maniscalco has been described as a young spirit with an old soul.
Maniscalco is fiercely dedicated to serving the resident of Tampa and believes that all in public service should put residents ahead of political and personal ambitions. Maniscalco related a story that is typical of his first few weeks on city council. He read a letter from someone in his district that complained about the road in from of his home. Maniscalco decided to do more than send a thank you form letter or even more than just sending a crew to fix the road. Maniscalco decided to visit the resident himself. The resident was pretty surprised to see their council member standing at their door.
Maniscalco is a new breed of politician that is accessible and responsive.
